Sofia and Papa loved their walks through the enchanted forest, where the trees whispered secrets and the flowers glowed like tiny lanterns.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Where do we go for our walks?

¿A dónde vamos nosotros a caminar?

At the edge of a clearing stood a tall, dark tower wrapped in thick vines.

The other forest animals walked right past it, as if it wasn't even there.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Why do you think nobody even looked at the tower?

"Papa, do you hear that?"

Sofia whispered.

From high above came a soft sound.

Not quite crying.

Not quite singing.

Something in between.

"Papá, ¿tú oyes eso?"

susurró Sofía.

Desde bien arriba venía un sonido suave.

No era llanto.

No era canto.

Era algo entre los dos.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What do you think that sound was?

¿Qué crees que era ese sonido?

A wise old owl shook his head.

"Nobody goes up there," he said.

A rabbit twitched her nose.

"It's too dark.

Too scary."

But Sofia looked up at the tower and felt something different.

She didn't feel scared.

She felt sad for whoever was up there, all alone.

No sentía miedo.

Sentía tristeza por quien estuviera allá arriba, tan solito.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

The animals felt scared. Sofía felt sad. Which would you feel?

Los animales sintieron miedo. Sofía sintió tristeza. ¿Tú qué sentirías?

"I want to go up, Papa."

Papa looked at the old door, then back at Sofia.

He pushed it open slowly and peeked inside.

He tested the first step with his foot.

Then the second.

He looked up the winding stairs and back down at his daughter's determined little face.

"Okay, mi amor.

But I'll be right here by this door the whole time.

If anything feels wrong, you call me."

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What's something brave you'd try, if I waited right there?

¿Qué cosa valiente intentarías, si yo te espero ahí mismo?

For PapáPara Papá

Papa doesn't talk her out of it and he doesn't climb it for her — he holds the door and says call me. That's the whole move, and it's worth noticing on a night when you're deciding how much to let them do alone.

At the very top, sitting by a window full of sky, was a boy.

He had messy hair and quiet eyes, and he was humming a little song to himself.

Around him were drawings, hundreds of them, covering every wall.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

If your walls were covered in your drawings, what would they be of?

"Hi," said Sofia.

The boy looked up, surprised.

Nobody ever came up.

"I'm Sofia.

What's your name?"

"Leo," he said softly, like he hadn't said it in a very long time.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

How does it feel when somebody says your name?

Sofia sat right down next to him.

She pulled a little bag of cookies from her pocket.

"Want some?

Papa always packs extra."

Leo took one slowly, and for the first time in a long time, he smiled.

Sofía se sentó al ladito de él.

Sacó una bolsita de galletas del bolsillo.

"¿Quieres?

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What's something small you could give someone to make them smile?

"Did you draw all of these?"

Sofia asked, looking around at the walls full of trees, stars, and flying fish.

"They're so beautiful!"

Leo's cheeks turned pink.

"Nobody ever saw them before."

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Is there something you made that nobody's seen yet? Can I see it?

¿Hiciste algo que nadie ha visto todavía? ¿Me lo enseñas?

"Leo, why do you stay up here all alone?"

Sofia asked.

Leo looked down at his hands.

"I came up here once, and nobody came to find me.

So I thought...

maybe nobody wanted to."

"Leo, ¿por qué te quedas aquí tan solito?"

preguntó Sofía.

Leo miró sus manos.

"Subí una vez, y nadie vino a buscarme.

Entonces pensé...

que quizás nadie quería."

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Have you ever felt the way Leo felt?

¿Alguna vez te has sentido como se sintió Leo?

For PapáPara Papá

“Nobody came to find me, so I thought maybe nobody wanted to.” Children draw conclusions like this quietly and then live inside them. If your child says this page feels familiar, that is worth stopping for.

Sofia took his hand.

"That's not true," she said.

"Sometimes people don't come because they're scared.

Not because they don't care.

But I came, and I'm glad I did."

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Who would you go and get, if they were up in a tower?

"Come on," Sofia said, standing up and pulling him gently to his feet.

"Papa's waiting.

And I think you're going to love the forest."

Step by step, hand in hand, they walked down together.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What would you say to Leo on the way down the stairs?

When they stepped outside, Papa was there with open arms.

The owl blinked in surprise.

The rabbit hopped closer.

The flowers in the clearing seemed to glow a little brighter, as if the whole forest was glad Leo had finally come down.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Who's happy to see you when you come home?

And Sofia learned something that day that she never forgot: you don't need magic to save someone.

Sometimes, all you need to do...

is show up.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Who could you show up for tomorrow?

¿Por quién podrías aparecer tú mañana?

You don’t need magic to save someone.

Sometimes, all you need to do…

is show up.

And I will always come up the stairs. — Papá · Y yo siempre voy a subir las escaleras. — Papá

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Say it with me: I can be the one who shows up.
