"A wish with his whole life" is the line doing the work in this book. It is how you say years of appointments, savings and paperwork to a four-year-old without lying and without a lecture. If your child asks what that means, the honest answer is short: it took a long time, and I kept going.

A small child does not need the mechanics — she needs to know that a kind woman helped, that everyone involved wanted her, and that none of it is a secret.
