Building Your Village as a Solo FatherConstruyendo Tu Comunidad Como Padre Soltero

There is a proverb: it takes a village to raise a child. The proverb is true. What nobody mentions is that for single fathers, the village does not exist by default. You have to build it yourself.

Start with other parents. Daycare, preschool, the playground: these are not just places for your child to socialize. They are places for you to socialize. Introduce yourself. Exchange phone numbers. Accept every invitation.

Find or create a community of solo dads. The infrastructure for single mothers is well-developed. For single fathers, particularly single fathers by choice, the infrastructure is almost nonexistent. If you cannot find a local group, start one. You do not need a formal organization; you need three other dads who understand your life.

Do not be afraid to ask for help. Single parenting without support is not sustainable. You need someone who can pick up your child when you have a work emergency. You need someone who can sit with you on a hard night and not offer solutions, just presence.

Consider professional support early. A therapist is not a sign of failure; it is a tool. Build relationships with women who can be positive female presences in your child’s life. This is not about replacing a mother. It is about ensuring that your child has access to diverse role models.

Be intentional about who you let close. Not every friendly face at the playground belongs in your inner circle. Your village should be people who respect your family structure without trying to fix it, who refer to your household without adding qualifiers like “for now” or “until you find someone.” People who treat your child as whole, not as half of something. Quality control matters more in a small village than in a large one.

If you have relocated internationally, as I have, building a village becomes even more deliberate. You do not have the luxury of childhood friendships, family down the street, or neighbors who have known you for years. Everything is built from scratch, in a new language, in a new culture, with a new set of social norms. It is exhausting. But it is also an opportunity to be selective in a way that people with inherited networks cannot. You get to choose every single person in your village. Make those choices count.

A village does not appear. It is assembled, one trusted person at a time, by a father who knows he cannot do this alone and is brave enough to say so.

Considera apoyo profesional temprano.
