The Coral Storm

La Tormenta de Coral

Two peoples of the sea, each certain the other hates them. They have been saying hello for years and neither has heard it.

Sofía was dreaming of the sea.

The water wrapped around her, warm and blue, and when she opened her mouth she found she could breathe.

But something was wrong.

The coral, which used to shine in a thousand colors, was now pale, gray, sad.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Have you ever had a dream you could still feel when you woke up?

An enormous song shook the water.

“BRUUUM.

BRUUUM.”

From a black cave came a Deep Singer, as big as a whale, with tired eyes.

“Go away, child,” his voice rumbled.

“There is no friendship left here.”

Un canto enorme sacudió el agua.

“BRUUUM.

BRUUUM.”

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Has anyone ever told you to go away? What did you do?

¿Alguien te ha dicho que te vayas? ¿Qué hiciste?

Sofía swam up to the coral gardens.

There lived the Shimmer Folk, tiny creatures who spoke with light.

But their lights were off.

A little elder Shimmer blinked weakly at her, red, red, red.

“The Singers hate us,” said the light.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

How can you tell when someone is sad without them saying so?

“We hate them back,” boomed the Singer when Sofía returned.

“We sing them greetings every morning, and they do not even answer.

They think they are better than us.”

Sofía felt something tight in her chest, the kind of tight feeling when someone is wrong without knowing it.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Has someone ever not answered you? What did you think it meant?

¿Alguien no te ha contestado alguna vez? ¿Qué pensaste que significaba?

Then Sofía understood.

The Singers sang so deeply that the Shimmer Folk, so tiny, could not hear a thing.

The Shimmer Folk spoke with light so soft that the Singers, in their dark caves, could not see a thing.

They had been saying “hello” to each other for years, and no one had noticed.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Is there someone who says things in a way that's hard to understand?

Sofía ran to tell them.

“You are greeting each other!

Nobody hates anyone!”

But the Singer turned his face away.

“It is too late, child.”

And the little elder Shimmer turned her light all the way off.

“It hurt us for too long.”

Sofía was left alone in the gray coral, and for the first time, she wanted to cry.

Sofía corrió a contarles.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What helps when you've tried your best and it still didn't work?

For PapáPara Papá

This is the page where being right isn't enough — she explains, and they still won't listen. If your child looks flat here, that's the book working. It's worth saying out loud that people sometimes stay hurt for a while, and that isn't your fault.

That was when the storm came.

The sea turned black.

The currents roared like monsters.

And in the middle of the chaos, a tiny, trembling little light was crying without a voice: a baby Shimmer, swept far from home, lost toward the deep caves where he had never been.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What do you do when something feels too big?

Sofía swam with all her strength to the Singers.

“Help me!

A baby is getting lost!”

But the Singer looked at her for a long, long moment.

“Why should we help someone who never spoke to us?”

Sofía felt real fear.

Maybe this time, being kind was not going to be enough.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Would you help someone who had been unkind to you?

For PapáPara Papá

A real question, and children usually answer it honestly: no. Don't rush them to the kind answer. The story gets there on its own, and it lands better if they were allowed to say no first.

Sofía took a deep breath.

“Because he knows nothing about that fight.

Because he is a baby, and he is scared.

And because you, the great ones of the sea, know something: that keeping anger inside does not bring anyone back.”

The Singer closed his eyes.

One of his tears, enormous, floated in the water.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Is it hard to stop being cross with someone?

“But softly, like a lullaby, so the little ones can hear.”

And the Deep Singers, for the first time in many years, lowered their tremendous voices until they became a soft hum.

“Bruum, bruum, bruum,” like a great heart beating in the darkness.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What's a sound that makes you feel safe?

¿Qué sonido te hace sentir seguro?

Sofía flew up to the Shimmer Folk.

“Light up all your lights, all together, as bright as you can.

It has to be a lighthouse.”

The little elder hesitated.

“What if the Singers mock us?”

Sofía took her tiny little hand.

“They are not mocking anymore.

They are singing for your baby.”

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Have you ever wanted to do something but worried about being laughed at?

Then the Shimmer Folk lit up.

One, ten, a hundred, a thousand golden lights that broke the darkness like a sunrise in reverse.

And below, the Singers saw it for the first time: the light of the Shimmer Folk, the light that had been trying to say “hello” to them for years.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

If you could light up, what colour would you be?

Si pudieras iluminarte, ¿de qué color serías?

The baby Shimmer, guided by the song calling like a heartbeat and by the light burning like a lighthouse, found his way home.

His mama held him so tightly that they both glowed the same color.

And above and below, in the caves and in the gardens, something started to heal.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Who do you look for when you feel lost?

¿A quién buscas cuando te sientes perdido?

” The oldest Singer came close to the little elder Shimmer.

He lowered his voice to a whisper she could hear.

“Forgive us.

We went years without listening.”

The elder lit up a gold, soft, enormous light.

“Forgive us too.

We went years without looking.”

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Is sorry a hard word to say? What makes it easier?

¿Es difícil decir perdón? ¿Qué lo hace más fácil?

For PapáPara Papá

Both sides apologise, and neither one was the villain. If your child has someone they're not speaking to, this is the page to leave a silence on.

Sofía watched them from far away, hugging in their own way: a soft song, a golden light.

The coral, little by little, began to turn pink and turquoise again.

She felt herself waking up, the dream ending.

But before she left, the old Singer spoke to her one last time.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What's something that got better after being bad for a while?

“Remember this, little Sofía.

When someone does not answer you, maybe they are not ignoring you; maybe they are speaking to you in a language you do not know how to read yet.

Being kind to what is different is not easy.

But it is the greatest magic there is.”

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Is there someone you'd like to understand better?

¿Hay alguien a quien te gustaría entender mejor?

Outside, the sun painted her room gold.

Sofía smiled.

She kept the secret of the Coral in her heart, like a little hidden pearl: everyone greets in their own way, and listening with your eyes, and looking with your ears, is what makes the whole world light up.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What would you like to remember from today?

¿Qué te gustaría recordar de hoy?

Being kind is not only smiling.

It is learning how the other one speaks, how they listen, how they feel.

It is being brave when someone does not understand, and staying to explain with love.

That is the greatest magic in the world.

With love, for my sky. · Con amor, para mi cielo.
