The Kingdom of You and Me

El Reino de Tú y Yo

The stars are being stolen and the kingdom is going dark. What waits in the cave is not a monster — it is something lonelier, and only a small girl works that out.

Every night before bed, the King told Princess Sofia a story.

Stories about dragons who liked pancakes.

Stories about fish who sang opera.

Stories about a kingdom made of starlight.

But tonight, the King did not tell a story.

Tonight, the story came to them.

The window burst open.

A tiny creature tumbled in, no bigger than Sofia's hand, glowing like a piece of the moon.

It was a Star Sprite, and it was trembling.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What story would you want me to tell tonight?

"Please," the Star Sprite whispered.

"The stars are disappearing.

Someone is stealing them from the sky.

If they are all taken, the kingdom will go dark forever."

Sofia looked at her father.

The King looked at Sofia.

"We have to help," Sofia said.

The King nodded.

"Then we go.

Now."

"Entonces vamos.

Ahora."

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What would you have said to the Star Sprite?

The King reached behind the tapestry on the wall and opened a door Sofia had never seen before.

Stone steps spiraled down into the dark.

Before they entered, he placed something around her neck: a small golden star on a chain.

"This was mine when I was young," he said.

"It will light your way when nothing else can.

Guard it carefully."

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

If I gave you something to keep you safe, what would you want it to be?

They stepped out into the kingdom.

But it was not the kingdom Sofia knew from her father's stories.

The sky had holes in it.

Dark, empty patches where stars used to be.

The rivers that once glowed were dim.

The flowers that once sang were silent.

The Star Sprite pointed toward the mountains.

"The trail leads there.

Into the Valley of Echoes."

They followed a trail of strange black dust that sparkled like crushed darkness.

"What is this, Papá?"

Sofia asked, touching it carefully.

The King knelt and studied it.

"Shadow dust.

Something from the deep dark made this."

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What do you think happened to this place?

The path led to a gorge, deep and dark, with mist swirling below.

The bridge was broken.

"We have to cross," said the Star Sprite.

"The trail continues on the other side."

Sofia looked down into the darkness.

Her hands shook.

But the King found a row of ancient stones floating in the air over the gorge.

Old magic.

Faint, but steady.

He stepped onto the first one.

It held.

He turned back and reached out his hand.

"Do you trust me?"

Sofia took a breath.

"I trust you, Papá."

Magia vieja.

Débil, pero firme.

Pisó la primera.

Aguantó.

Se volteó y le extendió la mano.

"¿Confías en mí?"

Sofia respiró profundo.

"Confío en ti, Papá."

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What's something scary you'd only do if I was holding your hand?

Step by step, stone by stone, they crossed together.

Sofia did not look down.

She looked at her father.

She stepped where he stepped.

She breathed when he breathed.

And when they reached the other side, her heart was pounding, but she was smiling.

On the other side, things were worse.

Flowers that once glowed had turned gray.

Strange footprints marked the ground, uneven and dragging, as if something heavy had passed through in a hurry.

"More stars vanished while we crossed," whispered the Star Sprite.

"We're running out of time."

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

When you're scared, does it help more to look away, or to look at someone?

They entered the Valley of Echoes.

The walls were smooth and dark like glass.

Every footstep bounced back ten times.

Every whisper became a chorus.

And in the dark stone walls, Sofia could see their reflections, but the reflections were moving just a little differently than they were.

"Don't stare at them," said the King.

"Keep moving."

Deep in the valley, they found it.

A cave.

Its entrance gaped open like a mouth.

Shadow dust poured from it like smoke.

And from inside, a faint glow pulsed like a heartbeat.

"The stars are in there," said the Star Sprite.

"All of them."

"Todas."

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What do you think the reflections were doing?

¿Qué crees que estaban haciendo los reflejos?

The King gripped his lantern.

Sofia gripped her golden star.

"Together?"

he asked.

"Together," she said.

Inside, the cave was enormous.

And there, hanging from the ceiling in webs of shadow, were hundreds of stars.

Flickering.

Fading.

Trapped.

"Oh no," Sofia breathed.

On the walls, scratched into the stone, were marks.

Hundreds of them.

Like someone counting the days.

Someone had been here a very long time.

El Rey agarró su farol.

Sofia agarró su estrella dorada.

"¿Juntos?"

él preguntó.

"Juntos," dijo ella.

Parpadeando.

Apagándose.

Atrapadas.

"Ay no," respiró Sofia.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Who do you think scratched all those marks on the wall?

Then the darkness moved.

Two enormous silver eyes opened.

A creature rose from the shadows, vast and shapeless, made of living darkness.

It held stars against its chest like someone holding something precious.

And it stared at them.

Not with anger.

With fear.

The King raised his lantern.

The Shadow shrank back.

"Stay behind me, Sofia," the King said.

But Sofia was looking at the creature's eyes.

She had seen eyes like that before.

In the mirror.

On nights when the castle was too quiet and the dark felt too big.

Those were not the eyes of a monster.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Have you ever thought something was scary, and it turned out to be sad instead?

¿Alguna vez pensaste que algo daba miedo, y resultó que solo estaba triste?

"Papá, wait," Sofia said.

She stepped forward.

The King's hand reached for her, but he stopped himself.

He watched.

He trusted her.

"Why did you take the stars?"

Sofia asked softly.

The Shadow trembled.

And then, in a voice like wind through an empty room, it spoke.

"Because I am alone.

I have always been alone.

The stars were the only things that kept me warm.

Without them, there is only cold.

Only dark.

Only me."

Siempre he estado solo.

Solo oscuridad.

Solo yo."

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What would you say to someone who's been alone a very long time?

For PapáPara Papá

This is the page worth slowing down on. The Shadow isn't defeated, it's listened to. If your kid asks whether it was bad, the honest answer is: it was lonely, and lonely can look like scary from the outside.

Sofia felt her heart break a little.

She knew what it felt like when the dark was too big and you wished someone would stay.

She looked back at her father.

He gave her a small nod.

You know what to do.

Sofia reached up and took the golden star from around her neck.

Her father's star.

The most precious thing she had.

It blazed in her small hands, filling the cave with warm, golden light.

"What are you doing?"

the Shadow whispered.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Would you give away your favourite thing to help someone? It's okay to say no.

¿Regalarías tu cosa favorita para ayudar a alguien? Está bien decir que no.

For PapáPara Papá

A real child will often say no here, and that's the right answer to accept. The book is not asking them to give their things away — it is showing them that Sofia chose to, which is different.

"This is for you," Sofia said.

"So you won't be alone anymore."

"But...

it is yours."

"My papá gave it to me to light my way.

But you need it more than I do.

Because I have my papá.

And you don't have anyone."

Y tú no tienes a nadie."

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What's something you'd share even if it was hard?

¿Qué compartirías aunque te costara trabajo?

The Shadow took the star.

And the moment it touched the light, something incredible happened.

Golden cracks spread through the darkness like sunrise breaking through the night.

The shadow peeled away, and underneath was not a monster at all.

It was a creature of soft, silver light.

Gentle.

Quiet.

Beautiful.

It had been hiding under the darkness all along.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What was hiding underneath the dark?

¿Qué estaba escondido debajo de la oscuridad?

The creature of light rose to the ceiling and touched the webs of shadow.

They shattered.

Hundreds of stars burst free, swirling and spinning and dancing, a tornado of light so bright that Sofia had to cover her eyes.

She was laughing.

The Star Sprite was dancing.

The King was holding her close.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What do you think all those stars sounded like?

¿Cómo crees que sonaban todas esas estrellas?

The stars poured out of the cave like a river flowing back to the sea.

One by one, they returned to their places.

The sky filled again.

The rivers glowed.

The flowers sang.

The kingdom came back to life.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

If our world went dark, what would you want to come back first?

The silver creature floated beside Sofia, smaller now, warm and peaceful.

It nuzzled against her like a grateful friend.

Then, gently, the golden star floated back through the air and settled around Sofia's neck once more.

"You gave me something more important than a star," said the creature softly.

"You gave me kindness.

That is a light that never goes out."

"Me diste bondad.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

When has someone been kind to you and you still remember it?

¿Cuándo alguien fue amable contigo y todavía te acuerdas?

The creature rose into the sky and became a new star, the brightest one of all.

A constellation shaped like two figures holding hands.

A king and a princess.

"Look, Papá!"

Sofia gasped.

"It's us!"

The King smiled.

"It's us."

"¡Somos nosotros!"

El Rey sonrió.

"Somos nosotros."

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

If you and I were a constellation, what shape would we make?

They walked home through the restored kingdom.

The Star Sprite waved goodbye and flew up to join its family in the sky.

The gorge now had a real bridge, solid and strong, covered in flowers.

The valley no longer echoed with strange sounds.

It echoed with music.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What's the best part about coming home?

Back in the castle, the King tucked Sofia into bed.

The golden star rested on her chest, warm and steady.

Through the window, their constellation shone brightest of all.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What makes your bed feel safe at night?

Sofia murmured.

"Yes, my star?"

"You let me walk up to the Shadow.

Even though you were scared.

Why?"

The King squeezed her hand.

"Because I knew you had something stronger than any sword or shield."

"What?"

"Your heart."

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What do you think your strongest thing is?

Sofia held her father's face in both her small hands.

"Papá, you know why I wasn't scared?"

"Why?"

"Because I always know you're right there.

No matter what.

Even when the dark is big and the shadows are scary and I don't know what to do.

I know you'll never let me fall."

No importa qué.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

When do you feel safest with me?

¿Cuándo te sientes más seguro conmigo?

The King held her so tight that for a moment, nothing else existed.

No kingdom.

No shadows.

No stars.

Just them.

"And you know what, Sofia?"

"What?"

"You make me brave too."

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Who makes you brave?

¿Quién te hace valiente?

For PapáPara Papá

"You make me brave too" is the line to say properly. Children rarely hear that they give their parents something back.

Sofia closed her eyes.

And somewhere between the last breath of night and the first whisper of morning, she dreamed of a kingdom where the stars always shone, where the rivers always sang, and where a king and his princess were never, ever apart.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

What kingdom would you want to dream about?

¿Con qué reino te gustaría soñar?

In the kingdom of you and me, no star stays lost, no shadow stays dark, and no one walks alone.

Because you, my love, are the reason the stars come back.

And I will always, always be right here.

Y yo siempre, siempre, voy a estar aquí.

💬 Ask him or herPregúntale

Where's your favourite place for me to be?

No star stays lost.

No shadow stays dark.

And nobody walks alone.

Ninguna estrella se queda perdida.

Y nadie camina solo.

And I will always, always be right here. — Papá · Y yo siempre, siempre voy a estar aquí. — Papá
