The Wish That Came True
El Deseo Que Se Hizo Realidad
“Somewhere out there is a little girl who is meant to be mine, and I am meant to be hers.” A father wished with his whole life, crossed oceans, and asked for help — and this is the story of how she arrived.
“En algún lugar hay una niña que está hecha para mí, y yo estoy hecho para ella.” Un papá pidió un deseo con toda su vida, cruzó océanos y pidió ayuda — y esta es la historia de cómo llegó ella.

Once upon a time,
before you were you,
there was a man
with a big, big love
and nowhere to put it.
His name was Papá.
Había una vez,
antes de que tú fueras tú,
un hombre con un amor
muy, muy grande
y ningún lugar donde ponerlo.
Se llamaba Papá.
Who did Papá have before you came along?

So Papá made a wish.
Not on a star.
Not on a candle.
Not on a penny
in a fountain.
He made a wish
with his whole life.
Entonces Papá
pidió un deseo.
No a una estrella.
No a una velita.
No a una moneda
en una fuente.
Pidió un deseo
con toda su vida.
If you could wish for one thing and really mean it, what would it be?
"A wish with his whole life" is the line doing the work in this book. It is how you say years of appointments, savings and paperwork to a four-year-old without lying and without a lecture. If your child asks what that means, the honest answer is short: it took a long time, and I kept going.
"Un deseo con toda su vida" es la frase clave de este libro. Es la manera de contarle a un niño de cuatro años años de citas, ahorros y papeleo sin mentir y sin dar un discurso. Si te pregunta qué significa, la respuesta honesta es corta: tardó mucho tiempo, y yo no me rendí.

But Papá needed help.
And that is where
a very kind woman
named Ana came in.
She carried you, Sofia,
safe and warm,
until you were ready
to come into the world.
Pero Papá necesitaba ayuda.
Y ahí fue donde llegó
una mujer muy buena
llamada Ana.
Ella te cargó, Sofia,
segura y calientita,
hasta que estuviste lista
para llegar al mundo.
Is there someone who helped our family that you'd like to say thank you to?
This is the page the whole book exists for, and it is one sentence long on purpose. A small child does not need the mechanics — she needs to know that a kind woman helped, that everyone involved wanted her, and that none of it is a secret. The mechanics can come later, and Before She Asks has the words for when they do.

And oh —
when you arrived,
Marshal sniffed your tiny hand
and wagged his tail so hard
his whole body wiggled.
Papá held you close.
And all that big, big love
finally had a place to go.
Y ay — cuando llegaste,
Marshal olió tu manita
y meneó la cola tan fuerte
que todo su cuerpo se movía.
Papá te abrazó bien cerquita.
Y todo ese amor tan, tan grande
por fin tenía un lugar
adonde ir.
What do you think Marshal thought when he met you?

You, Sofia, have a Papá
who wanted you so much
that he crossed oceans,
learned new languages,
and asked the world
for help —
just to find you.
Tú, Sofia, tienes un Papá
que te quiso tanto
que cruzó océanos,
aprendió idiomas nuevos,
y le pidió ayuda
al mundo entero —
solo para encontrarte a ti.
What's the furthest you've ever been from home?
¿Qué tan lejos de casa has llegado?

You came from a wish.
You came from love.
You came from the bravest
thing I ever did.
And you were worth
every single moment
of the wait.
Viniste de un deseo.
Viniste del amor.
Viniste de lo más valiente
que yo he hecho
en mi vida.
Y valiste cada momento
de la espera.
Shall I tell you about the day you arrived?
¿Te cuento del día que llegaste?
Children ask to hear their own arrival story over and over, and it does not wear out. If she asks for it tonight, tell it — the details you think are boring are the ones she is collecting.
I love you, my Sofia.
Always, always, always.
Te quiero, mi Sofia.
Siempre, siempre, siempre.

Shall we say it together — always, always, always?
¿Lo decimos juntos — siempre, siempre, siempre?
